Poor lubrication causes a large share of machine breakdowns, and it is one of the cheapest causes to fix. This guide brings together the basics every plant manager, maintenance engineer and workshop owner should know: choosing the right lubricant, the most common mistakes, storage and contamination control, extending tool and machine life, and cutting maintenance costs.
The five rights of lubrication
- Right lubricant: the correct type and grade for the machine, load, speed and temperature
- Right amount: neither too little (wear) nor too much (heat, leaks, churning)
- Right place: every lubrication point, clearly identified
- Right time: on a schedule based on running hours or condition
- Right condition: clean, dry, uncontaminated oil and grease
Choosing the right lubricant
| Equipment | Usual lubricant | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic presses, injection moulding, mobile hydraulics | Anti-wear hydraulic oil, ISO VG 32/46/68 | Hydraulic oil guide |
| Enclosed gearboxes, conveyors, mills | EP gear oil, ISO VG 220–1000 | Gear oil guide |
| Vehicles, gensets, tractors, construction engines | Engine oil to the maker’s SAE and API grade | Engine oil guide |
| Bearings, pins, bushes, chassis | Lithium, lithium-complex or calcium grease | Grease guide |
| Air compressors | Compressor oil matched to screw or reciprocating type | Industrial oils |
| CNC and machining | Cutting oils, spindle oils, slideway oils | Industrial oils |
| Thermic fluid heaters, storage protection, vacuum pumps | Heat transfer fluid, rust preventive oil, vacuum pump oil | Specialty lubricants |
Indian conditions (heat, dust, humidity, monsoon water and overloaded machines) often push equipment into “severe service”. Check the maker’s recommendation for severe conditions, and ask your supplier for the technical data sheet before switching grades.
Common lubrication mistakes
- Using one oil for everything. A single “machine oil” for gearboxes, hydraulics and bearings protects none of them properly.
- Over-greasing bearings, which causes heat and seal damage.
- Mixing incompatible oils or greases when topping up.
- Dirty top-ups: open drums, unclean funnels and shared containers bring in dust and water.
- Changing oil only when something breaks, instead of on a schedule.
- Choosing on price per litre alone. Cheap oil that fails early costs far more in downtime and repairs.
Storage and contamination control
- Store drums indoors, lying horizontally with bungs at 3 and 9 o’clock, or covered when upright
- Label every container and use separate, clean transfer equipment for each product
- Fit desiccant breathers on gearboxes and hydraulic tanks in dusty or humid locations
- Use the oldest stock first and keep lids closed on grease buckets
- Filter new oil before it goes into precision hydraulic systems
Extending machine and tool life
Good lubrication reduces friction and heat, the two main drivers of wear. On machine tools, the right cutting oil and correct concentration improve surface finish and tool life, and clean slideway and spindle oils protect accuracy. On heavy equipment, regular greasing of pins and bushes, and oil changes based on running hours, prevent the expensive failures: pumps, gearboxes and engines.
Cutting maintenance costs
- Make a lubrication schedule listing every machine, point, lubricant, quantity and interval
- Reduce the number of different lubricants where the specifications allow, so mistakes become less likely
- Use oil analysis on critical machines to change oil by condition, not by guesswork
- Train operators to report leaks, noise and overheating early
- Buy from a manufacturer who provides technical data sheets and application support

What are the five rights of lubrication?
Right lubricant, right amount, right place, right time and right condition. Getting all five right prevents most lubrication-related failures.
What is the most common lubrication mistake?
Using one oil for everything and over-greasing bearings are two of the most common. Both cause wear, overheating and early failures.
How can lubrication reduce maintenance costs?
A written lubrication schedule, fewer product types, clean storage, oil analysis on critical machines and the correct grades together reduce breakdowns, energy use and parts replacement.
Does Z Premium provide technical support?
Yes. Jenson & Jenson Lubricant provides technical data sheets and lab reports on request and helps customers choose the right grade for each machine.
